Hi! Today’s post will offer a glimpse into our custom order quilt process. We absolutely love custom quilt orders! The process of collaborating with our clients is challenging yet so rewarding! And thankfully we can proved our clients with a quilt rendering/illustration that will give them an idea of what their finished quilt will look like. We love bringing our clients’ quilt vision to life!
The Initial Custom Quilt Request
For this particular custom quilt order, our client wanted a baby quilt for a baby boy due this Spring. Our client knew that she wanted a triangle patterned baby quilt made of Blues and Grays. After further consultation, we discovered that our client preferred geometric and modern patterns.
Picking Fabrics for Custom Quilts
This step just might be our most favorite step in the custom order process!! Fabric!!! Sometimes our client knows what fabrics they’d like to use, but oftentimes the thought of sifting through millions of fabric options is OVERWHELMING!
Well, here is where we can help! See, Mom and I obsess over fabric and we curate our shop only with designer fabric. We typically use fabric from Robert Kaufman, Art Gallery Fabrics, Riley Blake, Cotton + Steel – just to name a few!!! We only work with new fabric for our clients.
For this custom quilt order, I found some really cool fat quarter bundles at Hawthorne Threads that were perfect for our client – Isometry in Indigo and Charcoal.
Cool Tidbit Hawthorne Threads: We learned that Hawthorne Threads prints their designs in-house and their fabric is a dream to work with! (No affiliation – we just love their shop!)
Custom Quilt Rendering
Our ability to create renderings is incredibly helpful for our clients! The clients essentially know what their quilt will look like after construction – they won’t feel like they are in the dark. Below is the rendering we settled on:
We opted to break up the Indigo Blues and the Charcoals with our favorite Robert Kaufman Kona in White. Our client signed off on our design and then it was time to work on the quilt!
The Finished Quilt
The Isometry Triangle Baby Quilt turned out beautifully! We even wrote up a fun and downloadable tutorial for Triangle Quilts so that you can make of your own!
For the quilting, we stitched in the ditches of all the triangles, and then added additional quilting on either side of the ditches.
Quilt Backing and Binding
For the quilt backing, we used Dottie in Jean Jacket by Cotton + Steel. For the binding, we used Dress Stripe in Smoke by Dear Stella’s Intermix Collection.
And for fun, we created our matching signature throw pillow. P.S. Our Pillow Tutorial is available for immediate download if you sign up for our monthly newsletter!
What a fun project! This baby quilt is sold and shipped to our client and now awaiting baby’s arrival.
If you enjoyed hearing about our custom quilt process and would like to set up a free custom quilt consultation, feel free to contact us. Starting prices for custom quilt orders are $200 USD. We can make quilts from baby to full-sized.
